The question myself and other colleagues have been asked thousands of times and probably daily. As an osteopath for 25 years, I have the privilege of working with patients seeking relief from musculoskeletal discomfort. While physiotherapists and chiropractors share my commitment to restoring health, each of us approaches care from unique philosophical foundations and with different treatment modalities.
For me, osteopathy is built upon the belief that the body operates as an integrated unit—the body’s structure and function are deeply interconnected.
Our diagnostic approach will take into account related areas to the region of pain or discomfort and is governed by the principle that the body possesses an innate capacity to self-heal and self-regulate when given the right conditions, and that musculoskeletal balance is essential to overall health. An osteopathy consultation will go beyond the physical treatment, incorporating lifestyle, environmental, and psychosocial factors that maybe influencing the patients’ symptoms.
Physiotherapists, from my observation, focus strongly on functional restoration through evidence-based rehabilitative exercise. Their philosophy centres on biomechanics and retraining the body’s functional units following injury or illness.
Chiropractors, on the other hand, concentrate on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system. Their work is based on correcting spinal misalignments—or “subluxations”—to restore optimal nerve communication and, thus, the body’s ability to heal.
At Wantirna Osteopathy we employ a broad array of manual techniques, including joint mobilisation and manipulation, stretching, targeted soft tissue work, dry needling and shockwave therapy. We believe in supporting our patients holistically, which means we also provide guidance on nutrition, exercise, and stress management.
Physiotherapist colleagues tend to prescribe specific exercises, offer targeted rehabilitation, and utilise manual therapies alongside modalities such as ultrasound and electrotherapy. Their approach centres on gradually helping patients regain strength and mobility.
Chiropractors primarily perform spinal adjustments and manipulations, aiming to address misalignments and restore proper nerve function. While some include soft tissue techniques or lifestyle advice, their core focus remains spinal correction.
In summary, from my perspective as an osteopath, our holistic philosophy and wide-ranging manual techniques distinguish us from physiotherapists and chiropractors. Each discipline offers valuable approaches, and understanding these differences enables patients to make informed choices suited to their individual health journey.
